What is Grit?

The personality trait of "grit" is described as a person who believes that they can change to be better than they were before. Those people who are willing to put in more work and put forth the effort needed to accomplish something are the ones with grit.
This was a great lesson in class. Our teacher shared an example of grit with us when she told us about her husband and how he works hard for the things he wants. I think this subject was of such interest to me because I don't feel like I have enough grit in my personality. I am often afraid I am not putting the work into accomplishing something that I need to and then I worry that I have not taught my children to work hard for things either. I am sure I am worrying about something that will work out alright, but I want myself and my children to live our lives with grit and to really work towards what we want and not give up on our ideas or dreams.
Two of my sons showed some true grit these past couple of years. We moved recently and the boys had to start at a new school. At this school, the sports are not as competitive as they were where we used to live, so in his senior year, my oldest son decided to try out for wrestling. I was not familiar with this sport before this, but it is intense. It takes hard work, lots of practice, controlling your eating to stay in the right weight class, and in addition to all of that, you also get your face ground into the mat on a regular basis. Well, I didn't really expect my sons to stick with this difficult sport but first my oldest and then my third son decided that this was something they wanted to do so they went for it. They used the grit in their personality and wrestled the full season and learned so much. I was so proud of their accomplishments.
As I studied this topic in class, I gave a sacrament talk that week to my family and talked about grit. I explained the meaning of it and the good things that can come of it. I asked my family for some examples of people with grit. They said people like Martin Luther King and Joseph Smith which are great examples of people with true grit. I think the topic motivated my boys to have more grit in their personalities to accomplish what they set out to do.
