The important topic of intimacy

In one of the last weeks of my class, we learned about a few important areas in which we need to teach our children about certain subjects. These are subjects that will help them as they develop and become independent people. I learned a lot from this weeks lesson. The topics they addressed specifically were about money, intimacy, and media. The main one I would like to focus on here is the FHE lesson we had to prepare and teach our family on intimacy. We were asked to watch a handful of videos from the Mormon Channel on the topic of intimacy in marriage and specifically on how to teach your children about the importance or it. These videos were fantastic and it eased any worry I had about teaching my kids about intimacy and sex and it's purposes and the importance of these in marriage. What I loved the most was that through this assignment, I felt like I was given permission to talk to my kids about sex and open up that dialogue. I know that I didn't really need permission. Th...

What is Grit?

The personality trait of "grit" is described as a person who believes that they can change to be better than they were before. Those people who are willing to put in more work and put forth the effort needed to accomplish something are the ones with grit. This was a great lesson in class. Our teacher shared an example of grit with us when she told us about her husband and how he works hard for the things he wants. I think this subject was of such interest to me because I don't feel like I have enough grit in my personality. I am often afraid I am not putting the work into accomplishing something that I need to and then I worry that I have not taught my children to work hard for things either. I am sure I am worrying about something that will work out alright, but I want myself and my children to live our lives with grit and to really work towards what we want and not give up on our ideas or dreams.  Two of my sons showed some true grit these past couple of years. We moved...

Caring for Yourself

For the past six weeks, I have been taking a class from BYU-Idaho on parenting and I have been learning a lot about how parents can improve their interaction with their children. There were a lot of things that I thought I already knew enough about, but I was surprised by how much more I understood a topic or what I could do to improve what I was currently doing after learning about it in this class. In this blog, I would love to tell you some of what I have learned.  Right away, one of the first things we did I just loved. We were given a "Personal and Relationship Inventory" in the first week where we discussed the subject of "Care for Self". I learned a lot when I took the survey and it helped me think of areas in which I can improve as well as areas where I feel I am doing well in. I liked it so much, that I did a family night using it and had my husband and children take the survey for themselves. We then discussed what they learned or better understood about t...
